User Interface

Understanding how Ajilius works in general terms will help you to learn the features of the application, without having to re-learn the basics every time.

We designed Ajilius around five types of screen:

  • List
  • Master-Detail List
  • Data Entry Form
  • Data Entry List
  • Script

Learn the basic use of these screens in the following sections.

A list screen – as its name implies – shows a list of a single type of data.

Each list has a title bar. The title bar may have actions specific to the list, such as the “Delete” link in the following example.

When lists may contain a large volume of data, a search box enables you to progressively filter the list as you type. All columns from the list are included in the filter.

If a list has more than one screen of data, paging controls support moving to the beginning or end of the list, or moving one page forward and backward. The number of rows per page can be adjusted in the User Settings screen.

The remainder of the list – referred to as the list body – is dedicated to the rows of data.

Master-Detail List

A master-detail screen is comprised of two lists, side-by-side. Let’s highlight where they differ from standard lists.

The master list is on the left side of the screen.

The detail list is on the right side.

Clicking a link in the master list …

… causes the detail list to update with information related to the master link.

Data Entry Form

Data entry forms support the entry and modification of information about your data warehouse and its content.

A typical data entry form is comprised of two sections. The left side has the controls for data entry:

The right side typically has a rich text editor for documentation. We strongly encourage you to keep your documentation up to date as you go, it helps the richness of the generated user documentation.

Data entry controls may be optionally grouped into sections.

You submit the form using the buttons at the bottom right of the screen. The Cancel button is always present, and closes the form returning you to the previous list. Other buttons will depend on the nature of data entry being performed. Typical examples are Add (add the contents of the form to the database), Change (change the database to reflect the details you changed), and Delete (delete the row from the database).

If we find errors during validation of your data, they are displayed with appropriate messages to help you correct the data.

Data Entry List

A data entry list is used when the same type of change needs to be applied to multiple rows in the Ajilius metadata.

The two most common forms of data entry list are select-lists and check-lists.

A select-list is a list of items for which a value may be selected from a drop-down list:

A check-list is a list of items from which one or more may be selected using the checkbox:

Use the action buttons to submit the form, or cancel and return to the previous screen:

Script screens are for the testing of ELT scripts that are generated by Ajilius from your metadata.

The script screen has two panels. The left panel typically displays the DDL script to create the table/s in your data warehouse:

The right panel typically displays the ELT script that extracts, loads and/or transforms your data:

Execute the scripts using the action buttons at the bottom of the screen:
